New York is a city built on speed and convenience. You expect your to-go cappuccino in under five minutes, and if it’s late, you’re already calculating the delay to the next 2-3 train on your commute to work. Walk too slowly and you’ll get the side-eye.
After six years here, I’ve fallen victim to my environment. I’ve become obsessed with speed: the kind that makes you tap your phone, reload a page, and curse the spinning wheel. As consumers, we expect products to move as fast as we do. Anything less feels broken. Just think about the last time you tried booking travel on an airline app.
This mindset isn’t just cultural - it’s systemic. Tech companies and cloud providers are laser-focused on latency. Every millisecond matters. Shaving one off is a victory, while adding one might cost you a customer. The entire architecture supporting SaaS applications is calibrated to one question: how long can your end-consumer afford to wait for a response?
But that dynamic is starting to shift.
Last weekend I let DeepResearch run a task for me in the background, left the apartment, and went for a walk. I had a research task that as early as two years ago would have cost me hour hunched over my laptop, eyes darting between tabs, fingers scattered across the keyboard. Instead, I kicked off the process, put my phone in my pocket, and walked out the door. For the next hour, I was present in my own life - breathing, thinking, noticing the world around me. When I returned, the results were waiting for me. I realized I hadn’t just saved time; I’d reclaimed it.
I’ve been trying to put words to this phenomenon for a while – what I’m calling the patience paradox. The more powerful and autonomous AI agents become, the more willing we are to wait for them. Not because we’re suddenly more patient consumers, but because the nature of our interaction with technology is fundamentally changing. We’re moving from active, screen-bound engagement to a world where our devices work for us, not with us. That shift is going to make us more latency tolerant than we’ve been in decades.

Every interaction was deterministic, every outcome the result of a chain of logic that we could see and understand. We were trained to expect instant feedback because we were the ones driving the process. Click, wait, result. Rinse and repeat.
But agent-first technology is different. When you ask an agent to “find me the best Italian restaurant on the Upper West Side and book a table for two at 7pm,” you’re not just triggering a script. You’re delegating a multi-step, open-ended task to a system that can reason, search, negotiate, and execute – all without your continued involvement. The magic isn’t in the speed of the response, but in the fact that you don’t have to be there for it at all.
This is a profound shift. The interface is no longer a screen you stare at, but a conversation you start and then walk away from. The value isn’t in the immediacy of the answer, but in the freedom it gives you to do something else while the work gets done.
Active vs. Passive: The New Rhythm
There’s a fundamental mismatch between the way we interact with our phones and laptops (active, attention-hungry, always-on) and the way AI agents are designed to work. The old model demanded our constant presence. The new model asks us to trust, delegate, and detach.
I see this every day now. I’ll ask my agent to summarize a document, draft an email, or pull together a market analysis. Then I’ll step away (sometimes literally, sometimes just mentally). I’m not anxiously watching a progress bar. I’m not refreshing a page. I’m living my life, confident that the task will be done when I return.

If you want a glimpse of the future, look at the recent moves by OpenAI and Jony Ive. The next wave of consumer hardware won’t be built around screens and keyboards. It will be built for voice-first, agentic interactions; devices that listen, understand, and act on our behalf, often without us even noticing.
Imagine walking down the street and saying, “Book me a table for dinner tonight.” You don’t stop, you don’t pull out your phone, you don’t scroll through options. The agent handles it. Maybe it takes a minute, maybe it takes ten. You don’t care, because you’re not pausing your life while waiting for a response.
This is what good design looks like in the AI era: technology that fades into the background, that feels as natural as talking to a friend. The best products will be the ones you barely notice.
Compute Constraints: The Supply-Side Driver
There’s another, less glamorous reason why we’ll become more latency-tolerant: compute bottlenecks. For the last several years at Nadia Partners we’ve been hyper-focused on originating around these constraints. In the U.S., an additional 55 GW of data center IT capacity is expected to come online in the next five years, compared to 25 GW of existing capacity today. At the same time, only 350 miles of high-voltage transmission lines were completed nationwide last year, compared to 1,700 miles annually in the early 2010s, underscoring the bottleneck in expanding grid capacity to meet demand. There are hard limits to how fast and how much we can process, and these constraints aren’t reversing any time soon.
But here’s the twist: for the first time, consumers might be willing to wait. Not because they have to, but because the experience is designed to let them. When your agent is working in the background, you’re not losing time – you’re reclaiming it.
Hardware: The Next Platform Shift
Everyone’s racing to build the next killer AI app, but I think the next key battleground is consumer hardware. Our current devices were built for a world of active engagement – for capturing our engagement through look, touch, and feel. The next generation will be built for passive, agent-driven workflows. They’ll be always-on, always-listening, and optimized for distributed compute. What a waste it is that 90% of the time, the phones in our pocket are sitting there idly!
This isn’t just a technical challenge; it’s a design challenge. How do you build devices that are so seamless, so natural, that people barely notice they’re using them? How do you create experiences that feel less like using a tool and more like having a conversation?
